A career-best performance against Southern Mississippi was not enough for Tyler Jones, junior quarterback, to earn the Texas State football teams’ second win of the season.
Jones will have to settle with being the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week. In the 56-50 loss, Jones accounted for a career-high 470 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns.
Jones ran for 160 yards on 18 carries, including two touchdown runs of 54 and 35 yards. He completed 31 of 46 passes for 333 yards, with eight different receivers totaling a reception.
Facing a 21-point deficit in the third quarter, Jones led two touchdown drives to shave the difference to seven points. It would have been the second double-digit deficit erased under Jones’ tutelage.
Through three games, Jones is 33rd in the country in total quarterback rating.
