Joe Knows: Notre Dame makes unWeis choice

There is a small town in Indiana by the name of South Bend. This town is home to what Tony Kornheiser would call “The University of Football in America” — otherwise known as the University of Notre Dame.

Notre Dame fielded its first football team in 1879. The Fighting Irish celebrate 12 national championships, seven Heisman Trophy winners, numerous famous head coaches and the most consensus All-Americans of any school.

Bobcats fall 3 points short

Texas State’s Bradley George, senior quarterback, had a chance for the second consecutive week to lead the Bobcats to a come-from-behind victory.

George had not thrown an interception in 210 passing attempts. However, his final pass Saturday was caught by McNeese State safety Malcolm Bronson at the Cowboys’ 10-yard line with 22 seconds remaining.

“I stepped up in the pocket and just tried to make a play,” George said.

The Bobcats were down by three with 1:30 minutes left in the game when Texas State took over on offense.

Joe Knows: Bobcats strive for title, give bigger sights to others

The Texas State Bobcats have an influence on the BCS national title picture.

That’s right. However miniscule it may be, the Bobcats have an impact on what teams may or may not play in BCS bowl games — even the national championship.

If Texas State keeps winning games, Texas Christian’s stock will rise. The Horned Frogs are No. 4 behind No. 3 Texas, No. 2 Alabama and No. 1 Florida.

The Bobcats traveled to Fort Worth Sept. 19 to compete against TCU. Texas State knew it was in for a challenge and was met with one, losing 56-21.

Joe Knows: Big game of the season almost fills stands

Saturday marked the first time the new-looking Bobcat Stadium welcomed home alumni.

Whether the renovations helped the team win is up for debate, but at least the stands were almost as full as the season-opener against Angelo State.

In fact, the attendance reflects only 154 fewer people attended Saturday’s homecoming game.

Despite the fact it was Halloween, more students should have attended what was the most important game of the season thus far.

From the locker room

The Bobcats played fearless throughout its 28-7 homecoming victory over Stephen F. Austin Saturday at Bobcat Stadium.

“That was the best defensive performance of the season for sure,” said Bradley George, senior quarterback.

The Bobcat defense held SFA, the best scoring team in the nation, scoreless in the first half and gave up only one touchdown.

Will Thompson, senior defensive back, said the defense secured the red zone.

“They were one of four in the red zone,” Thompson said. “Those goal line stands we had were huge.”

Joe Knows: Favre faces Packers

This weekend, history will be made. It will be epic. It will be magical. It will be everything you hoped it would be times 10. It has been built up and written about since the moment he signed on the dotted line. Brett Favre is returning to Lambeau Field in Green Bay.

If you think this guy gets way too much attention, you’re probably right. But it doesn’t matter because the media are giving the people what they want, right? In fact, FOX has moved Sunday’s game from 12 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. for the audience.

Joe Knows: Referee lockouts created 'watered-down' version of NBA

Should NBA fans have to pay full price to see a depleted product on the court?

Well, that’s what will happen if the NBA and its referees do not reach an agreement on a labor contract.

I know they are “just” the refs, but they are undoubtedly the best in the world at what they do.

There is a saying, “You don’t appreciate something until it’s gone.” The NBA coaches know this all too well.

Thus far this pre-season, Charlotte Bobcats’ coach Larry Brown has been fined $60,000 for publicly criticizing the replacement referees.

Joe Knows: Unfair system picks champion

By this time next week, the first BCS poll of the season will be announced.

If it was released today, the computers would rank the teams with Florida No. 1, since it is atop the AP and USA Today polls.

I’ve seen polls with Alabama at No. 2 and Texas at No. 3, and vice versa. But the computers would compute Alabama at No. 2, since they have beaten two ranked opponents, one being Virginia Tech.

Joe Knows: Opportunity for Brazil becomes apparent with World Cup, Olympics

Rio de Janeiro prevailed over Madrid, Tokyo and Chicago Friday for the right to host the 2016 Olympics.

Along with the 2014 World Cup, Brazil will be the epicenter of the world’s two biggest sporting events in the upcoming decade.

Brazil made a strong case before the International Olympic Committee (IOC), citing that South America has never hosted the Olympic Games. The Olympics not only haven’t been played in South America, they have only been played twice in the Southern Hemisphere in Melbourne and Sydney, Australia.
