House passes $1 million for Texas State program


U.S. Congressman Lloyd Doggett has secured another grant for Texas State.

Texas State’s Center for Hetero-Functional Materials’ will receive $1 million through the Department of Defense Appropriations Bill if passed by Congress and the president.

“These are very important dollars to us,” said Bill Covington, associate vice president for Research and Federal Relations. “We are very grateful to representative Doggett getting this into the legislature for us. We hope it survives and we get the money.”

Covington said the decision for the money is still pending.

Parking conundrum: Freshmen could lose spots outside dorms


Faculty Senators have debated the idea of changing parking next to dorms to faculty parking, according to Bill Peeler, Transportation and Parking Committee co-chair.

“The idea of freshmen not being able to have cars on campus and having parking  in satellite lots is something that has been debated many times over in the past several years,” Peeler said in a previous interview. “I’m sure it will be one that we discuss again.”

Satellite parking lots are on the perimeter of campus.

UPD closing in on parking lot burglars


The University Police are calling Bobcat Village and the Mill Street commuter lot area a current ‘hotspot’ for vehicle burglaries.

Manuel Hernandez, UPD lead investigator, said thieves burglarized about 18 vehicles in the area since the Halloween weekend. He said the cases occurred in Bobcat Village with more occurring in the conjoining Mill Street commuter lot.

Hernandez believes the different burglaries to be apart of the same criminal episode.

Thomaides takes Place 6


Incumbent John Thomaides won City Council Place 6 with 1,228 votes — 63.36 percent of the total.

Thomaides ran against Monica Garcia, who received 560 votes accounting for 28.9 percent, and Anita Fuller, who received 150 votes with 7.74 percent.

“I think it proves we have a broad base of support, and the citizens believe in the ideas put forward in the campaign,” Thomaides said. “We didn’t leave any stone unturned. I’m so proud of the effort of the team.”

Thomaides said his campaign was successful because of his past experience.

Campaigns end for City Council candidates today


San Marcos voters will cast ballots today choosing between six City Council candidates and 11 proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution.

The candidates running for Place 5 are Lisa Marie Coppoletta, Shaune Maycock and Ryan Thomason. The candidates running for Place 6 are John Thomaides, Monica Garcia and Anita Fuller.

Early voting has low turnout


Early voting in San Marcos has had a low turnout, said Hays County elections administrator Joyce Cowan.

Texas State held early voting Wednesday through Thursday in the LBJ Student Center. Cowan said the number of votes cast at Texas State, which has a student body of more than 30,000 people, on those days were 55 and 76, respectively.She said for the first-four days of early voting 488 people casted ballots in San Marcos.

Daniel Pink, author of the common experience book A Whole New Mind, drew a crowd at his presentation at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Network films police, students for new TV series


Students could flip on their televisions and see classmates in front of red and blue flashing lights.

Camera crews have paired up with the San Marcos Police Department to film students during their encounters with police officers.

Cineflix Productions, in association with the G4 network, is filming footage for its coming series Campus PD. According to Cineflix Productions’ official Web site, the show will “depict university life from the perspective of the law enforcement professionals who police them.”

Alamo franchise drafts plans for local location


Moviegoers are gearing up for an Alamo Drafthouse being built in San Marcos, though developers say the project is in its ‘preview’ stage.

Triple Tap Ventures LLC has acquired two existing company-owned Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas in the Houston metropolitan area. Triple Tap has plans to construct new properties in the Houston market as well as Amarillo, Corpus Christi, Lubbock, Midland/Odessa and San Marcos, according to a press release.

Federal bill grants funds to Texas State

An appropriation bill has recently granted $300,000 in funds to a Texas State program aimed at improving watershed management.

The Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies appropriations bill by U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison allotted money for the Gilbert M. Grosvenor Center’s Watershed project.

“This funding to the Grosvenor Center for Geographic Education will help ensure water supplies, which are important for both economic development and maintenance of ecosystem health, are adequate,” Hutchison said in a press release.
