Give thanks, give to others

Maya Angelou once said, “I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver.”

Sometimes I become distressed whenever I reflect on the problems in my life. I wonder why certain things had to happen to me or why I had to go through a particular experience.

I often forget there are other people in this world who have problems that may exceed mine, and who need hope.

Smoke-ban withdrawals

Implementing a campus-wide smoke ban is not going to encourage smokers to cut down on their nicotine intake, or provide an incentive for quitting. The goal of advising students to a healthier lifestyle will not be accomplished if individuals have their smoking privileges taken away.

Apparent lack of progress discourages youth vote

Getting students to register for elections has always been a problem, and getting them to vote has been an even bigger hurdle.
Society cannot ascribe lethargic behavior as a reason for young adults not registering or voting. There are other causes for why students don’t vote.

Maybe students feel it’s not worth the time and their vote doesn’t matter. Some probably feel the issues don’t affect them.

Abstinence is the only protection from STIs

The decision to offer free Sexual Transmitted Infection screenings by the Student Health Center is under review, but students shouldn’t get optimistic. Offering a free screening to students will probably be denied. The Student Health Center already charges fees for services.

It is highly unlikely individuals will have access to anything free offered by the Health Center.

Trauth open-door meetings should be better advertised

Students who want to have their concerns addressed about certain things at Texas State may not always have the time to attend an ASG meeting, or have the opportunity to voice their issues through its open-door policy.

Sometimes attending these ASG meetings can be as interesting as watching paint dry. Giving students another outlet to raise concerns was needed. University President Denise Trauth took two hours on Wednesday Oct. 14 to hear students’ concerns in her office. According to an article in Oct. 15 issue of The University Star, only four students attended.

Religious organizations cast aside

Religion is a discussion some shy away from, but others are happy to discuss their knowledge of the subject and strong relationship with Jesus Christ, Allah or another supreme being.

With so many religions and beliefs, how is it possible for a non-believer to decipher what religion or scriptural information is the one for them?

Low self-esteem affects college students

Gaining acceptance from others is not easy.

Growing as a person in today’s culture can sometimes be a difficult task if an individual doesn’t act how society expects them to. Low self-esteem is often a closed subject matter college students believe only little kids or teenagers go through. However, our society is probably filled with young adults who battle low self-esteem issues everyday.

GPA requirement not high enough for fraternities

We have all probably had the experience of seeing certain guys with slicked back hair, tucked-in collared shirts, shined shoes and solid colored ties cruising around campus.

Yes, I’m talking about fraternity guys. Some seem to have it all together. I believe they want to be the center of attention, while trying to be seen as more than just party-goers. I wonder what some of these guys’ responses would be if asked what their GPA is.

Community college teaches valuable lessons, benefits

The average freshman attending college this year for the first time will feel apprehension as well as excitement. Indeed, attending college for the first time is an experience an individual should be lucky enough to have.

Become involved in campus organizations

Sitting alone in one’s room trying to figure out what to expect on this new journey called college is normal and expectable. Apprehension is one of the many feelings an individual may have.

Adjusting to college will be different for each person and every student will go through their own college experience differently. One of the best ways to adjust to college life is to be involved in the college environment, which can have a home-away-from home atmosphere. Texas State offers this kind of environment.
