Wake the Dead brings coffee theatre to life

 

Local performance organization Troupe Texas presented its third play and poetry reading at Wake the Dead Coffee House Wednesday.

John Hood, adjunct faculty, founded the theater ensemble at the University of Texas in 1990 when he served as head of design and technology at the department of theatre and director of productions at the Performing Arts Center.

Hood brought Troupe Texas to Texas State in 2001 when he began teaching as an adjunct professor in the department of theatre and dance, University College and Honors Program.

Phone application reduces shopping frustrations

Students looking for a good deal at San Marcos’s Tanger and Prime Outlets might find their search easier with the help of a new phone application.

Software engineer Austin Westfall and business partner Sariah Welch Lopez have developed “Softwhere,” an application for the Blackberry.

The application includes an inclusive mall directory, an option to save the location of a parking spot, notifications of sales at favorite retail stores and information about special events.

Mamacita’s plans relocation across from outlet malls

Enchilada, carne guisada and margarita connoisseurs might find themselves traveling farther out of town to pursue a favorite establishment.

The San Marcos branch of Mamacita’s Mexican Restaurant had plans to remodel the existing building. With talk of an Aquarena Springs underpass and the threat of possible extended street closures, restaurant executives have set their sights on creating a new location.

Dancers perform at 25th Opening Door show

Opening Door Dance Theatre presented its 25th anniversary show Thursday and Friday at Evans Auditorium.

The group was started in 1984 by LeAnne Smith and two other women to provide an opportunity for advanced dancers to gain experience.

“We wanted to bring a more professional level of dance to Texas State,” said Smith, director of dance.

Day of the Dead: Students celebrate Dia de Los Muertos

The University Honors coffee forum was covered in vibrant colors Wednesday during the annual Dia de Los Muertos celebration.

Death is not seen as morbid in the typical Dia de Los Muertos tradition, but as a reason to celebrate life. This particular Dia de Los Muertos celebration came from humble beginnings in 2005.

Festival blends community, art promoting local talent

 

Greg Hardin is a husband, journalist, author and painter. But in the eyes of his colleagues, he is a believer in the value of the arts.

Hardin is a founding member of the Central Texas art advocacy program – Art for Texas. The group hosted its first festival last weekend at the Four Four Five Ranch in Fentress. The festival was intended to showcase and promote local artisans, musicians and vendors from San Marcos and surrounding areas.

Bike Cave acquires funds from RecycleNow program

 

The Bike Cave program received a check Tuesday for their contribution to the first RecycleNow electronic-waste event held on Earth Day in April.

Marianne Framme, associate coordinator of Home Depo,t and Melissa Kayda, representing PSC Environmental and Waste Services, presented the $7,725.28 award to the Bike Cave representatives.

The Bike Cave workers helped to generate funds from the proper and safe disposal of unwanted televisions, computers, cell phones, radios, stereos, and other electronic devices.
