Old Main, Texas State’s iconic building, will likely be undertaking roof renovation in the upcoming year, said Michael Petty, assistant director of Facilities Planning, Design and Construction.
Petty said a study of Old Main was completed in 2008 by Volz & Associates, Inc. to determine what areas needed to be upgraded, modified or replaced.
Voter attendance on Election Day was low, said Joyce Cowan, Hays County elections administrator.
“A lot of people didn’t turn out,” she said.
Election day was Tuesday, and 8.11 percent of registered voters participated at the polls.
Cowan said one of the main reasons she believes the turnout was small is because people do not educate themselves about the candidates or propositions.
It is the second semester since passing time between classes was reduced from 15 to 10 minutes.
The ASG University Relations Committee members are researching the possibility of returning to a longer walking period between classes.
ASG Sen. Brice Loving, marketing senior, said he was concerned when the time change was initially implemented in fall 2008, but found there was no feasible solution.
Texas State courses were not meeting the required number of classroom hours, which meant five minutes were taken from walking time and added to class.
A new schedule allowing students the option to use meal trades earlier than 1 p.m. at The Lair could become a reality.
ASG Sen. Fidencio Leija said Chartwells officials recently asked if the student government had any questions or concerns, and The Lair was on the top of his list.
“I brought up that you have to wait until 1 p.m. to use your swipes,” Leija said. “The question I had is ‘Why can’t we use it at noon?’”
The Lair is the only place on campus with a set time that students can use meal trades.
Texas State went pink for a week.
The Zeta Tau Alpha sorority “pinked out” campus for their annual Pink Out event on behalf of Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Zeta members distributed around 20,000 breast cancer ribbons in The Quad. They also passed out self-examination shower cards to dorms throughout campus.
“We want everyone on campus to know breast cancer is prevalent in girls our age, and men sometimes too,” said Erin McCracken, assistant philanthropy chair for Zeta Tau Alpha. “It’s not about our sorority being seen.”
Texas State students could have more days off to prepare for finals in the future.
Students may get two dead days instead of one. A proposal adding another preparation day is currently being put forth.
ASG President Chris Covo and Vice President Tommy Luna recently met with Michael Heintze to discuss the option of creating another dead day.
How to make San Marcos more attractive to veterans will be a topic of debate at the next City Council meeting.
“It’s going to be one of a series of programs I’m going to try that will make veterans and the military community know that, when you think of San Marcos, you don’t just think of Texas State,” said Jude Prather, veteran and creator of the program. “Instead you think ‘That’s a really veteran-friendly community.’”
If successful, the plan will wave utility deposit fees for local veterans, provided they show discharge papers or military ID.

Residents dedicated a few minutes of their Friday morning honoring victims of Sept. 11 during a traditional remembrance ceremony at the San Marcos City Hall.
“Today our nation marks the eighth anniversary of the terrorism of this infamous day,” said Mayor Susan Narvaiz in her dedicatory speech. “This anniversary and world events since Sept. 11 give us pause as we reflect on the pain and loss terrorism brings to the world.”
