Austin, San Antonio trams to be discontinued in fall

The Bobcat Tram Interurban Service will no longer provide transportation to the Austin and San Antonio areas after a review of Texas State’s transit services deemed the out of town routes a financial and safety issue.

The BTI services will discontinue operation on Aug. 26, said Nancy Nusbaum, interim director of transportation services. Four percent of Bobcat Tram riders use the shuttles to and from Austin and San Antonio, and 48 percent of those passengers said they would drive to campus, according to the review’s findings.

“It is always difficult to cancel something that is seen as somewhat successful,” Nusbaum said.

Nusbaum said the five buses used for BTI services will be reassigned to the San Marcos routes.  Three of the buses will be used to transport students directly from commuter parking lots to campus. The use of the two other buses has yet to be determined.

“We will be looking at out other routes that are high in demand,” Nusbaum said. “We will just have to re-evaluate our options.”
