The Whataburger restaurant at the intersection of Guadalupe Street and River Road will be closed from July 6 until late August.

Renovations began in March to make way for a newer, larger Whataburger restaurant.

Whataburger’s new design will feature two drive-thru lanes, a larger parking lot and an expanded, modern dining room with features such as LED lighting and photos of Whataburger’s history lining the walls, said Jenny Gregorcyk, director of client services.  Tearing the building down will increase square footage and make it larger than a typical Whataburger location. Kitchen equipment will be new as well as the design of the restaurant to increase efficiency.

The Whataburger located on Centerpoint Road across from the outlet malls will remain open and untouched, Gregorcyk said. Customers can feel free to visit that location while they wait for the other restaurant to be reopened.

Updating the restaurant will take two phases. Whataburger was able to remain open during phase one of the construction on the parking, but the second phase will require the restaurant to temporarily close for a few months so crews can finish all of the building remodeling, Gregorcyk said. Phase two started in June and on July 6, the restaurant closed.

The design of the updated San Marcos Whataburger restaurant will set the standard for new Whataburger restaurants going forward, Gregorcyk said. The restaurant is different and larger than any other Whataburger restaurants.

The new, updated Whataburger restaurant is scheduled to reopen late August.
