Softball ends second consecutive season below .500

The Texas State softball team lost Wednesday to No. 8 UT-Arlington in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference tournament 5-1. 

The Bobcats entered the tournament on a three-game winning streak before being eliminated by the Mavericks.

Ashley Wright, sophomore pitcher, started the game and threw four innings, allowed three earned runs and struck out three. 

Rayn House, senior pitcher, relieved Wright in the fifth inning. House pitched three innings, struck out four with two runs allowed. 

Wright earned the loss in the matchup, finishing the season with a 3-6 record.

The Bobcats had five different players record a hit. Kelli Baker, sophomore infielder, went 1-4 and scored the only run for the team.

Callie Collins, Mavericks pitcher, threw a complete game to improve her record to 13-14 this season.

Nina Villanueva, Maverick infielder, went 3-4 with two runs batted in including an RBI triple to take the lead 2-1 in the top of the fifth. 

UT-Arlington scored four runs in the fifth and sixth innings to secure the 5-1 lead.

Texas State finishes the season with a 26-30 overall record, their second consecutive season with a below .500 winning percentage.
