Texas State wins second match in three-game series against South Alabama

The Texas State baseball team defeated South Alabama Saturday afternoon 2-0, moving its record to 7-4 in conference play.

Austen Williams, junior pitcher, recorded the first complete game shutout of his career, striking out seven while walking one.

Williams, the Sun Belt strikeout leader, allowed six base runners on the game and five hits. Williams threw 129 pitches on the afternoon. The win moves his season record to 4-1.

Colby Targun, junior outfielder, singled home the first run in the bottom of third, scoring Preston Dorsey, freshman outfielder, from second.

The Bobcats scored once more in the game when Garrett Mattlage, junior infielder, singled down the first base line, scoring Matt Smith, sophomore infielder, from second base.

The Jaguars’ starting pitcher, Kevin Hill, matched Williams’ complete game with one of his own, striking out eight while walking four.

Texas State recorded three stolen bases in the game. Smith, Dorsey and Ben McElroy, junior outfielder, recorded the stolen bases. 

The team faces the Jaguars again Sunday in the series finale.
