Undergrad admission officials join Facebook


The Texas State Admissions office has been making lots of new friends lately.

Kaplan, a subsidiary of the Washington Post Company, conducted a test prep and admissions survey, which said that out of 401 of the nation’s top colleges and universities, 21 percent are developing policies to help them use social networking sites, like Facebook, in the admissions process.

Texas State is participating in the growing social networking trend.

Early voting has low turnout


Early voting in San Marcos has had a low turnout, said Hays County elections administrator Joyce Cowan.

Texas State held early voting Wednesday through Thursday in the LBJ Student Center. Cowan said the number of votes cast at Texas State, which has a student body of more than 30,000 people, on those days were 55 and 76, respectively.She said for the first-four days of early voting 488 people casted ballots in San Marcos.

SMPD hinders trust with students, ASG leaders say


A bill was read stating the disapproval of recent San Marcos Police Department actions at Monday’s ASG meeting.

Sen. Matthew Posey, political science senior, authored the bill to show public disapproval of the city’s decision to allow film crews of the upcoming G4 show Campus PD to accompany ride-alongs with the San Marcos Police Department.

Stelos Alliance offers scholarships, opportunites to student leaders


Gordon Taylor assumes many roles.

He is the founder of a new student organization, the chief of staff for the Associated Student Government as well as a member of Student Foundation and Black Student Alliance.

Taylor’s multiple leadership roles, however, might not have been possible were it not for a gift he received last spring.

Taylor received a scholarship from a non-profit organization started by Texas State alumni.

Pi Kappa Alpha members closer to IFC charter


A former Texas State fraternity expects to complete the colonization process early next semester after a five-year suspension for hazing.

The Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, also known as PIKE, completed two of three phases in the process of obtaining a charter.

“We are not considered initiated members,” said PIKE President Myles Burnett, history senior. “As soon as we finish phase three, we will be considered official Pi Kappa Alpha members.”

The national chapter will recognize the PIKES when they finish phase three and attain a charter, Burnett said.

First Transit increases lap numbers during peak hours

 

Following student concerns of not enough trams, especially during peak travel times, the Office of Auxiliary Services has added additional times to five major routes throughout San Marcos.

The increased service on routes which include Bobcat Stadium, Campus Loop, Aquarena Springs, Blanco River and Post Road, went into effect Oct. 14.

Fewer faculty members taking developmental leave


The Faculty Senate has seen a drop-off in applicants for developmental leave according to Chair Debra Feakes.

Faculty Developmental leave applications are due annually Oct. 15. The leave allows faculty to take a full year off with a 50 percent pay cut or a semester off with full pay. Applicants take developmental leave to focus on specific research objectives.

Texas State police investigate apparent student suicide

The University Police Department is investigating the apparent suicide of a student whose body was found Monday morning on university property.

The body of David B. Edwards, a 23-year-old freshman from Kerrville, Texas, was found early Monday morning by his brother, James Edwards, a Texas State graduate student.

The two brothers lived together at an off-campus residence.Police were notified of the discovery at 4:26 a.m. by James Edwards and were dispatched to an abandoned building on the hillside above Spring Lake. A suicide note was found at the scene.

City firefighters respond to alarm at Evans Liberal Arts

The San Marcos Fire department responded to a fire alarm at Evans Liberal Arts 3:45 p.m. Thursday after a fire alarm on the third floor was pulled because of smoke, said SMFD Capt. Russel Allen.

No injuries were reported, nor property damaged. The building was cleared for re-entry around 4 p.m.

Two fire engines and eight firefighters responded. Capt. Craig Miller said the call is one of three the fire department has responded to involving Evans Liberal Arts this semester.
