Zeta girls bash female athletes

Part of the purpose of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, as stated on their website, zetataualpha.org, is "to mould such opinions as will conduce to the building of a purer and nobler womanhood in the world." Indeed, the Zeta girls I have come across have been beautiful and delightful to be around, that is until recently.

The Post Road bus has a stop very near to the Zeta sorority house, where several of the members live. I ride the Post Road bus a few times a day and I am always in the presence of at least one girl who belongs to the sorority. Often, they travel in packs, dominating the ambience of the already uncomfortable bus ride with the screechy, inquisitive inflections at the end of each and every sentence.

I was fortunate enough one afternoon to have forgotten to grab my mp3 player when heading for the bus stop. When a group of five Zeta girls positioned themselves near me, I prepared myself to hear a lot of discussion I would rather not be subjected to.

They were discussing one of their sisters, as females so often do. They said that she needed to quit playing softball. This caught my attention and I looked over at the plain brunette who had made the comment, wondering what she could mean by that. When one of her other sorority sisters asked her why, the brunette replied, "It's a dyke sport."

I was surprised to read on the Zeta Tau Alpha website that part of the creed of their organization is to "see the good in everyone." How are they supposed to be able to see the good in everyone when they make such offensive, hasty generalizations about their own sister? This kind of attitude among girls who are supposed to be lifelong friends is not exactly conducive to a"purer and nobler womanhood in the world."

This makes me wonder, if the girls of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority aren't even living up to their own standards, what exactly is their organization all about?

It seem's as if the university star has some vendetta against greek life. I would think that a university run newspaper would be less focused on trying to single out and attack greek life on such a regular basis and instead would focus on writing articles that the student community as a whole can relate to instead of catering to those who decided not to join such organizations and now feel the need to bash anything greek. And by the way, softball is a dyke sport.

why in the world did you waste your time writing this garbage?

"with the screechy, inquisitive inflections at the end of each and every sentence" &

"I prepared myself to hear a lot of discussion I would rather not be subjected to."

sounds like someone's jealous.  you talk about dis-respectful women and hasty generalizations, yet this whole "blog" entry is nothing short of judgemental and childish.  and no, i'm not a ZTA. i'm a member of another sorority on campus and my roommate, the woman who showed this article to me, is a member of yet another sorority on campus.

grow up and write about something people actually care about. thanks.

Clearly you did care about it.

Otherwise you wouldn't have said anything and would have gone about your daily business without even giving it a second thought.

P.S. putting "panhell love! <3" after a comment that is obviously rude, is showing that this comment probably represents the entire Panhellenic. Some how I think the Panhellenic would NOT appreciate the way you just handled the situation.

Reading between the lines

In response to the comments made about this article:

I don't believe the author of this article was trying to single out Zetas or intentionally bash a particular sorority. As a Greek member, you should know that whether or not you are in your letters, you are still respresenting your sorority or fraternity wherever you go simply by the fact that some people know who you are and which house you belong to. With that in consideration, you should probably re-read this article. The author does not seem to be a part of the Greek community, therefore the mere act of a group of sorority girls verbally degrading one of their own should prove to be alarming regardless, due to the fact that the common assumption about Greek life is that we are unified, we are all one- thus why she questioned the purposes of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. And to try and shift the blame to another sorority only stains the image of Greek life you're projecting even further. So maybe next time when you're in your letters, or even if you're not, you might want to consider not only how you're representing your house, but how you're portraying half the population here at Texas State and millions around the nation who, I'm sure, care about what principles they convey even if you do not. In this case, stick to the old saying-"if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."

I am a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, and I question why you say that WE make "hasty generalizations." You seem like one of the people that believe that every single girl in a sorority is exactly like the other. I find myself to have many differences from many of the other Zetas. By refering to us as "they", and saying that we all make hasty generalizations, you yourself are making a generalization about every single girl in ZTA. I played softball in high school, and therefore my opinion differs from the one who made the comment about softball being a "dyke sport." Looks like we're not the only ones who make generalizations. It's hard to believe, but not all of us are the prototypical sorority girl that you sound like you think you know.

Next time make sure to bring your mp3 player, because there is not a softball player in Zeta Tau Alpha. There is one in ChiO, but not in ZTA.
