Veteran takes own life after barricading himself in apartment with weapons

Printer-friendly versionSend to friendAn Iraq War veteran committed suicide Saturday after he barricaded himself in his Post Road Place apartment with guns, and made threats to kill himself and others. Law enforcement officials found his body after breaking through a window.

The Hays County Sheriff’s Department, Crisis Negotiations, Special Operations, SWAT, San Marcos Fire Department and San Marcos Police Department were on the scene around 2 p.m., witnesses said. Detectives forced entry through a window around 5 p.m. after the white male had stopped responding to calls around 3 p.m., said a Hays County Justice of the Peace.

Until the body was found, Park Place Residents were restricted to the perimeter of the complex.

The victim’s roommate said he walked downstairs to his car around 2 p.m., and when he returned, the front door was locked. The roommate said the resident was an Iraq War veteran who took medication for mental health issues.

He said although the two weren’t close friends, they got along well and he “always seemed cool, even today he was cool.” He said he never expected something like this to occur.

“They [veterans] don’t get as much help as they should,” he said.
