SMPD hinders trust with students, ASG leaders say

A bill was read stating the disapproval of recent San Marcos Police Department actions at Monday’s ASG meeting.

Sen. Matthew Posey, political science senior, authored the bill to show public disapproval of the city’s decision to allow film crews of the upcoming G4 show Campus PD to accompany ride-alongs with the San Marcos Police Department.

Posey said SMPD did not properly inform the public prior to allowing the filming. He said students informed him there were cops with cameras, and upon further investigation, discovered no one within the university knew anything about it.

“There was very little information disseminated to the university and it was just an act by San Marcos Police Department,” Posey said. “It was an act made without any consultation with the university whatsoever.”

ASG President Chris Covo said members of Achieving Community Together should have informed university officials. Not informing the university, he said, goes against what ACT represents.

“They knew this was going on and they never told anyone,” Covo said. “No university officials, no UPD officers, no students. That doesn’t coincide with what we’re trying to do with Achieving Community Together and with the community and the relationship we’re tying to build.”

Posey said the decision not to communicate with the university hinders the bond  A.C.T. is trying to create.

“To go out and do this sort of thing really hurts our trust with the city,” Posey said. “A lot of emotion came out of that. Thinking we’ve got this cooperation, this tie, then all of a sudden learning that without informing us at all whatsoever, they behind our backs came through with this new idea to show us on nationwide television in a negative light.”

Posey said the show will not aid in breaking barriers between the students and the community.

“It goes against the whole idea that we’re cooperating, that we’re trying to develop this welcoming, warm community to put a TV camera in the squad cars,” Posey said. “Which (this) is not going to do anything, its not going to stop crime, its not going to develop any sort of program that is going to make kids not want to do anything.”

Covo said the bill serves as a means of official representation on behalf of the students. An official letter will be sent to all members of City Council from the City Council Liaison Committee.

“This is to show that on behalf of the student body as a whole, that we don’t understand,” Covo said.  “That we don’t think this was a good thing for us especially since we didn’t know what was going on.”

Posey said the effects of Campus PD could be severe.

“If one person watches that and decides not to come to Texas State for it, that hurts our retention,” Posey said. “If one employer  sees that after considering one student, that affects the future of that student.”

ASG officials said the San Marcos Police Department will not be depicted in a negative light, and the students will see the ramifications.

“The university is going to look bad, the students are going to look bad, and we’re going to have to cope with that,” Posey said. “The San Marcos Police Department is  going to leave with whatever benefits they acquire.”

I bet the amount of tazings will go up significantly. It seems every time you get one of our douches in bullet proof vests in the view of a camera lens they get taze happy.

Clairfication?

Yes the Daily Record did run an article about the TV show, however it was not before they started filming. The fact that the record ran the story does not change the fact that no one within the University was informed prior to filming. If cops and city officials knew prior to filming, why did no one else on the ACT ommittee know. ACT - Achieving Community Together - a committee thhat serves to help bridge the gap between the city and Texas State. Tell me how this show does anything to aid in bettering relations between the two communitites.

What is wrong with the second paragraph? Public disapproval of the city's decision to allow the show to ride along in their police cars? Where should the clarification be? And what wrong with the spell checker?

For one thing.. SWT used to be known as a party school nationwide.

According to Princeton review: (2009-2010) TOP PARTY SCHOOLS

  1. Pennsylvania State University
  2. University of Florida
  3. University of Mississippi
  4. University of Georgia
  5. Ohio University
  6. West Virginia University
  7. The University of Texas at Austin
  8. The University of Wisconsin-Madison
  9. Florida State University
  10. University of California-Santa Barbara
  11. University of Colorado-Boulder
  12. University of Iowa
  13. Union College
  14. Indiana University
  15. DePauw University
  16. University of Tennessee
  17. Sewanee: The University of the South
  18. University of North Dakota
  19. Tulane University
  20. Arizona State University

They also are filming in in Chico, CA as well as already bolded above FSU and are opening up a wide variety of schools.

Why was Texas State selected, my guess is the fact that San Marcos is such a small town with an enormous squad of PD both university and city not to mention state etc.

If they were attacking or attempting to defame a Univeristy or give it a so called "bad rap" they most likely would have target schools on the "party list".

IMHO.. EXCESSIVE ENFORCEMENT does not instill safety in a community when student see police every 3 blocks on their way to campus, especially when they are usually targeted for minor vilations that end up making the city money. I HIGHLY question the ethics of SAN MARCOS POLICE and their ability/power to instill FEAR over young growing adults trying to get an education.

I'd be skeptical of how many students on a poll are satisfied, paranoid, annoyed or whatever have you, with local law enforcement.

In closing, no show that airs on G4 of all media outlets will IMHO render a BAD RAP for TEXAS STATE and i think its great they selected San Marcos.

We will only know the truth once the show airs on G4 in late NOV or early DEC.

(NOT FLAMING ANY PD and am just expressing my own opinions)

That aside..  My big question is why are ticket prices so outrageous and how did txstate decide to outfit their upd with dodge chargers and for what reason.  And how is it that SMPD are still stuck with oldshool SUV's?? Or is there a transition taking place right now as we know it with with the addtion of unmarked undcover vans/cars.

Police are essentilal to any community and I beleive that they strive to alway PROTECT AND SERVE, but like every business, there are always a few bad seeds.

If this show is about how

If this show is about how police interaction with students in cities with large universities, there should have been at least one report in the Star. My opinion, as a former reporter for the Star, is that the Star was negligent in not keeping their collective ear to the ground on this, but that it is also the responsibility of SMPD to alert the STUDENT publication, not just the Daily Record.

On the upside, this offers the SMPD to be known in state and national communities as more than just the San Marcos "It's Just a Dog" PD. Unfortunately, that incident is what put this city on the map for some folks. Make it right, SMPD. Make it right.

If you were to read the San Marcos (Semi) Daily Record, you would have seen one or two articles posted about the tv show being filmed with SMPD over a 4 week period. You criticize the SMPD for not coming to your front door and telling you in person about what is going on. They have much better things to do than that. Read a real newspaper and you will be informed with what is going on with this city. Remember there are other things in the city besides Texas State University. I am an alumni of Texas State, and not a citizen of the city. I have always tried to stay current with what is going on with the city and school. If all else fails, the university officials should be reading the paper as well, or even pick up a phone and call SMPD and ask them. The telephone does work both ways.....
