8/9/2010 - Jay Janner/AMERICAN-STATESMAN -  Daniel McCarthy is handcuffed by UT police officers near the Gregory Gymnasium on the UT campus shortly President Obama's appearance there on Monday Aug. 9, 2010.  McCarthy was protesting the wars.

San Marcos mayoral hopeful Daniel McCarthy was arrested on the University of Texas campus Monday. The cause of the incident is unknown, but could be linked to a high-profile visitor in Austin. President Barack Obama was in town to deliver a speech about higher education and the economy and the tagline of the Statesman’s photo labels McCarthy as a “war protestor.” McCarthy was booked at 12:33 p.m. in the Travis County jail on the charge of criminal tresspassing. He was arrested by the University of Texas Police Department.

McCarthy ran for mayor in 2008, but finished third behind incumbent Susan Narvaiz and challenger David Newman. Last year, McCarthy worked with Lisa Marie Coppoletta on her unsuccessful City Council run.
