Four cars involved in accident on Sessom

Printer-friendly versionSend to friend

Four cars were involved in a collision occurring just before the hard turn on Sessom Drive at 3 p.m. Thursday, after a shower recently moistened the roads.

Kyle Hinojosa, driver of a blue Ford Focus, said a tan Honda Civic stopped in the middle of the road without a discernable reason. Hinojosa was traveling behind him headed west on Sessom when he hit his brakes to avoid a collision, he said.

Rather than stop, the Focus slid on the wet asphalt into oncoming eastbound traffic where a silver Dodge Ram, driven by Blake Smerek, was approaching around the corner, Hinojosa said.

“I was already too close to the car when it entered my lane” Blake said.

Blake collided with the Focus’ front left bumper head on. The Focus spun 180 degrees, which left it facing west in the eastbound lane.

The Honda which was allegedly stopped in the middle of the road for no discernable reason was untouched.

A red Chevy Cobalt then slid into Hinojosa again, colliding with his front bumper, he said. A silver Toyota Corolla following closely behind the Cobalt also slid into the mess, slightly tapping the Cobalt’s rear bumper.

Roughly five minutes after, a Dodge Durango rounded the corner heading west when the three cars stalled in the middle of the road, which prompted the driver to hit his brakes.

He entered the lane and tapped the Cobalt’s front bumper. However, after examination, the Cobalt’s driver, who decided the damage was indiscernible, released the Durango driver from responsibility.

Hinojosa said he sustained “minor” injuries to his wrist. The driver of the Honda drove away before Hinojosa was able to get a license plate number. The police arrived approximately 3:15 p.m.

The fire department arrived five minutes after the police and swept up the pieces formerly attached to the vehicles and blocked traffic until a tow truck was able to lift the immobile blue Focus away from the scene.

Marshall Holmes, Tree House Apartments resident, was sitting next to the curve Sessom.

“Screeching tires can be heard at least once a day from the porch,” he said.
