Former Texas standout and NBA player Terrence Rencher has been added to the Texas State men’s basketball team’s staff as an assistant coach.
Rencher brings with him a plethora of experience, ranging from high school head coaching to playing overseas basketball in countries such as Israel and Italy.
Originally born in the Bronx, New York, Rencher made his way to Texas after receiving a scholarship to play basketball for the Longhorns in 1992. Little did anyone know at the time that this 6’3” guard from New York would become Texas’ all-time leading scorer with 2,306 points over his four year stint in Austin, a record that is still intact to this day.
Rencher helped lead Texas to three NCAA Tournament appearances, three Southwest Conference championships, one SWC Tournament title and a combined record of 83-44 for the Longhorns from 1992 to 95.
The Washington Bullets (currently the Wizards) selected Rencher early in the second round at the No. 32 slot but his draft rights were quickly traded to the Miami Heat. Rencher was traded again to the Phoenix Suns just before the midpoint of his rookie season. Rencher appeared in 36 games, starting one, and averaged 2.9 points per game in his rookie season.
Rencher decided to take his talent overseas where he thrived in five different countries. He started out playing for Bnei Herzliya in Israel. He then played for three different teams in Italy, Pallacanestro Cantù, Basket Rimini and Viola Reggio Calabria. Rencher moved to Croatia to play for the KK Split and played for two different German teams, Telekom Baskets Bonn and RheinEnergie Köln, before ending his career.
Rencher has now been trying to make a name for himself as a coach. He was the head coach and basketball program director for the boys’ varsity team at Regents School of Austin in 2007 to 2008. He served as an academic mentor for the Texas men’s basketball team from 2006 to 2008. Rancher’s latest job was as an assistant graduate coach at Saint Louis.
