College students choose majors for a variety of reasons, and are influenced by many factors. One of the most powerful influences are parents, and many push their children away from liberal arts degrees. However, Steven Pearlstein of “The Washington Post” believes concerns are unwarranted. The unemployment rate for majors in humanities and liberal arts is 8.4 percent, which is about the same for majors in computers and math, which is about 8.3 percent. Pearlstein states, “the barista problem—is also overstated.”
