Main Street drafts new vision statement

San Marcos Main Street Program has drafted a new vision statement that culturally defines the downtown area and creates an atmosphere where local businesses can flourish.

The Advisory Board’s newly-developed statement is “To foster a downtown that is a unique and culturally vibrant destination, where local businesses thrive and people of all ages can connect, create and celebrate.” The statement indicates the program’s mission to support businesses as it attracts residents and tourists to the area.

Daniel Moncanut, business manager at Sean Patrick’s Irish Pub, supports the new vision statement as it reflects the idea of their business.

“That is exactly who we are,” Moncanut said. “Typically, a bar is populated with younger adults, but we invite people of all ages to come eat and drink here.”

Main Street hosts and promotes annual events to engage residents and unite the community with businesses. In late April and early May, Main Street hosted the Wine and Art Walk, a ticketed event that invited people to enjoy wine-tastings and local artwork around downtown businesses.

“The downtown events are a great way to attract people to businesses. We received people who came and ate at (the restaurant) after the Wine Walk,” Moncanut said.

A few businesses downtown said they hope the new vision statement can make a difference to downtown during the summer by drawing more people to the area.

San Marcos Farmer’s Market and Art Squared are two monthly events Main Street promotes.

The program accepts volunteers who want to be a part of transforming downtown into a lively destination.

“The Main Street approach relies on the passion of the professionals and volunteers who make up the Main Street community,” said  Debbie Harvey, Main Street Advisory Board chair, in a written statement.

Kristen Torrez, public relations senior, volunteered with Main Street and became an intern with the program in June.

“I’m really big in supporting local business, and being behind the scenes of Main Street allows me to get my voice known and even though I’m an intern, the program does a great job of making it a team effort,” Torrez said.

Torrez said the local businesses create the personality of San Marcos, which inspired her to continue to be a part of the Main Street team.

“Downtown is the heart of San Marcos,” Torrez said. “Main Street invites people of all ages to come take part in enjoying the city. Its vision for the future is continually growing with ideas and events planned for this fall and winter.”

Texas State’s Family Weekend Wine Walk is the next annual event and will occur in September. To align with the new vision statement, Main Street increased an additional hundred tickets from previous years for students under the legal drinking age to participate in enjoying downtown with family.

Main Street unites the downtown community through four subcommittees—organization, design, promotion and economic restructuring. This year marks the program’s 30th anniversary in San Marcos, and it remains one of the oldest Main Street programs in the state.
