Texas State Softball ends the 2016 season with a loss to California in the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional.
The Bobcats had a 2-0 shutout victory against Samford in the first elimination round.
Texas State scored it’s two runs on seven hits, both of their runs were in the bottom of the second on four hits. Offensively the Bobcats were on a run against the Bulldogs.
Taylor Webb, sophomore utility, hit a double to left center making it the first hit of the game for the Bobcats. Kendall Wiley, first base senior, hit a single and advanced Webb to third. With a wild pitch, Webb brought it home with the first run of the game. Jaelyn Young, sophomore catcher, hit a single down left field and brought Wiley in to score with the second run.
The victory over Samford marked the 40th win of the season for the Bobcats. There have been only four Bobcat teams to reach the 40-win mark.
Randi Rupp, sophomore pitcher, had her 30th win of the year. Only two pitchers in school history have reached the 30-win mark.
After the victory over Samford, Texas State moved on to play Cal for the second time in the tournament. The Bobcats were eliminated with a 4-3 loss, and it ended the 2016 season.
Cal took an early lead in the top of the first with a 2-0 score. Texas State capitalized in the next two innings to tie the game. The Bobcats scored a run in the second and a run in the third to make the score 2-2.
Corrina Liscano, third base junior, scored in the bottom of the second. Webb hit a ground out, and Liscano advanced to second. With a single from Sara Rupp, sophomore catcher, Liscano came around and made the score 2-1.
Kimberlin Naivar, first base/outfield junior, scored in the bottom of the third. She advanced to second with a ground out from Ariel Ortiz, sophomore shortstop. A single to right from Liscano brought Naivar in to score making the game 2-2.
The game was tied until the fifth inning. The Bears had a pair of infield singles and a single to the center to take a 4-2 lead.
Webb hit a solo home run in the half to make the score 4-3.
With the Bobcats down by one, they tried to rally in the bottom half of the seventh. Kelli Baker, second base senior, drew a two out walk and Naivar reached on a fielding error by the shortstop.
A fly ball to right field ended the game. Cal had the victory and they went on to the Regional Championship.
Texas State is 8-14 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. The last time the Bobcats got a win in the regional was in 2012 against Bethune-Cookman.
Webb tallied her team-leading 12th double in the first game of the day. She hit the only Bobcat home run of the tournament against Cal.
Baker drew her 98th career walk in the bottom of the seventh.
The seven runs scored in the California vs. Texas State game was the most scored in a game at the Tuscaloosa Regional.
Texas State finished the 2016 season with a 40-22 overall record and this was the first NCAA Regional bid since 2012.
The Bobcats made it to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship Game for the first time since joining the league in 2014.
This was head coach Ricci Woodard’s 16th season at Texas State and she now has a 556-362-1 overall record.
