June 10 UPDATE 3:49 p.m.: The couple involved in the June 9 shooting has been identified as Joyce Chamness, 85, and Ben Chamness, 87. The couple was found dead inside Joyce’s hospital room at the Central Texas Medical Center in San Marcos in an apparent murder-suicide.
June 9: An elderly couple was found dead from gunshots this morning at the Central Texas Medical Center.
Officials said the husband, 87 and wife, 85, were found dead in the wife’s hospital room. Police were called to the scene at 7:49 a.m. after their daughter found the deceased couple this morning. Police do not believe there was an active shooter situation or a continuing threat to the public.
San Marcos Police Chief Chase Stapp said in a June 9 press conference the patient had a serious medical condition but declined to speculate whether a murder-suicide motive was related to the shooting. The deceased couple was sent to Central Texas Autopsy.
The couple was found dead approximately 15 mintues after the shooting, Stapp said. Hospital staff told police they did not hear the gunshots. Police did not find a suicide note at the scene.
“We think the shooter is no longer with us,” said Trey Hatt, communications specialist for the city of San Marcos.
In a city press release, Hatt said police officers were not involved with the shooting and police did not apprehend a suspect. Officials said the deceased couple were not residents of Hays County.
