President Barack Obama declared Texas a disaster May 30 after historic floods surged through Hays and nearby counties on Memorial Day Weekend.

Affected individuals in Harris, Hays and Van Zandt Counties will have access to federal aid through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Flood victims and business owners can receive grants for temporary housing and repairs if their homes are unlivable. Residents can apply for low–interest loans of up to $200,000 for primary residences to cover uninsured property losses. Farmers and ranchers can receive up to $500,000 in loans to cover losses from production and property losses excluding their primary residency.

Eligible counties for FEMA assistance funds include Harris, Hays, Navarro, Van Zandt, Cooke, Gaines and Grimes Counties.

FEMA funding is only applicable regarding damages made May 24 by severe storms and flooding.

Other FEMA programs include crisis counseling, veteran’s benefits and advisory assistance for legal personnel. State and local governments and certain non-profits may have access to federal relief from FEMA.
