University students, staff and faculty received an alert from Emergency Management at 5:24 p.m. Monday stating there was a tornado sighted on campus. Recipients of the message were advised through email and text message to seek shelter indoors and wait for the all-clear signal.
According to Texas State, the alert that students, staff and faculty received was due to severe weather conditions and possible sightings in the area. The only reported tornado was near State Highway 80 and Highway 21 near Wal-Mart.
Several news sources providing updates on weather activity in the region retweeted the alert on their social media platforms after Emergency Management tweeted it.
The conflicting reports led to confusion from readers and community members following the weather coverage. Many replied to the tweets with confusion, stating that sirens were going off in the city and asking for clarification on the location of the tornado.
At 6:17 p.m., Emergency Management sent out another alert giving the all clear from the tornado and stating it was safe to leave shelter.
