Whether you’re staying in San Marcos or planning to make the drive to Austin, here are just a few of the events happening over Memorial Day weekend.
For the live music fan
Students looking to kick off their Memorial Day Weekend with a dose of Americana music should search no further than Cheatham Street Warehouse. The Texas Music icon will feature the Blue Water Highway Band at 9:30 pm May 22. Tickets to the 18 and over show are $5 and can be found on Cheatham Street’s website.
For the race car enthusiast
Central Texas Speedway will host The Budweiser 250 on May 23. In addition to the races, the event will also include food vendors, a classic car show and live music by Keith Kelso. Student tickets are $12 and a variety of ticket packages are available.
For the veteran
Memorial Day was created to honor people who lost their lives while fighting for our country. The Hays County Veterans Memorial will host a Memorial Day ceremony on May 25 to pay tribute to each of these men and women. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. and is free and open to the public.
For the foodie
Students looking to enjoy backyard barbecue without the hassle of cooking should head to the second annual Memorial Day Cookout at the ABGB Brewery in Austin. The event starts at 12 p.m. on May 25 and will feature pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs and barbecue plates prepared by Smokey Denmark’s Smoked Meat. In addition to the food, country singer Anthony Ray Wright and the country band Crooks will perform beginning at 4 p.m.
For the thespian
Zilker Hillside Theater in Austin is in its final weekend of the free production of William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Students can attend the 8 p.m. performance from May 22 through May 24, and are encouraged to bring blankets and a picnic to enjoy while they watch.
