A man was indicted by a federal grand jury May 19 for a series of bank robberies along the Interstate Highway 35 (IH-35) corridor.
The jury charged Willie James Cleveland, 34, with nine counts of bank robbery according to a May 21 City of San Marcos press release. Cleveland stole more than $50,000 from the eight banks he robbed, according to the press release.
Cleveland was indicted for a Feb. 26 robbery at the Wells Fargo Bank in San Marcos. He was also charged for bank robberies in San Antonio, New Braunfels and Austin, according to the press release.
Police from San Marcos, San Antonio, Austin and New Braunfels joined forces with the FBI to investigate the series of robberies.
Cleveland was arrested by the San Antonio Police Department on April 20 and has remained in federal custody since his arrest, according to the press release.
He faces up to 25 years in federal prison for the three robberies which involved assault. Cleveland could face an additional 20 years for the remaining bank robbery counts, according to the press release.
